A typical thing to do when the sun is out on a Bank Holiday is to go for a walk and have a pub lunch. So my parents and I set out after our walk to what is a family favourite the Horse and Jockey. The Horse and Jockey is situated in Tywn Yn Odyn, Wenvoe just outside Cardiff and is a true diamond.
We went there for their £5 lunch menu which for the portion and quality is brilliant. I chose the scampi, chips and peas which is one of my favourite pub meals. My Dad chose the rump steak, chips and peas. My Mum chose the fish, chips and peas. We ordered at the bar and sat down in this homely pub which had a nice steady flow of people. Our food arrived after a short wait and it all looked delicious. My scampi was lovely with thick batter and soft fish inside. The chips were chunky and the peas were perfect, soft and fresh. My Dad enjoyed his steak, he like me was a huge fan of the peas. My Mums fish also looked yummy with crispy thick batter. She particularly loved the chips and said they were lovely and fluffy on the inside. For £5 the portion size was good and the quality was brilliant.
As soon as we polished off our main course the waitress brought us the desert menu. This was full of yummy delights and if you couldn’t pick one you could have a combination of all of them. I decided to try the triple chocolate brownie with cream. My Mum chose the bread and butter pudding. Again the food was served quickly and was presented well. My brownie was mouthwatering. It possessed everything I love about brownies. Rich, gooey and warm! It was the perfect desert. My Mum’s bread and butter pudding looked equally good. Filled with raisins and smothered with custard it put a smile on her face. My Dad decided not to have a desert but didn’t hesitate when the waitress brought three spoons to sample each of our dishes. The meal for the three of us including drinks was £28 which is very reasonable.
The Horse and Jockey serves good quality meals that are always served with a friendly warm smile. I have been a customer there on many occasions and have never been disappointed. They particularly do a lovely Sunday roast. Their vegetables are the best!! Reasonable price traditional British food where could you go wrong!!
